This article explores the connection between the Slavonic Orthodox liturgical poetics and its perception by a Russian worshiper's ear. Consciously, s/he hears Church Slasvonic as a separate language but subconsciously registers it as a higher version of Russian The article attempts to address these socio- and psycholinguistic factors as key to the problems of Russian ritualism and non-critical fundamentalism, problems dating back to at least the 17th century but as relevant today as then.
