A native of London, England, Dr. Shanmugam completed her undergraduate degree in Physiology at the University of Oxford before attending Imperial College School of Medicine where she graduated with honors in Medicine in 1999. Dr. Shanmugam obtained membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2002 before moving to Washington, DC in 2003. She completed residency and fellowship training at Georgetown University Hospital, and joined the faculty in the Division of Rheumatology in 2007. She is the recipient of numerous awards including an American College of Rheumatology Physician Scientist Development Award, the John Eisenberg Memorial Career Development Award, and the C. Bertram Hoffberger Research Achievement Award. She is currently the KL2 scholar at the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science.
