Bio

Patrícia I. Vieira is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, a member of the Comparative Literature Program and of the Film and Media Studies Program. Dr. Vieira's research focuses on Contemporary Brazilian, Portuguese and Lusophone African Literature and Film, Literature and Philosophy, Literary Theory and Lusophone Postcolonialism.

Her books include "Seeing Politics Otherwise: Vision in Latin American and Iberian Fiction" (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2011), "Cinema no Estado Novo: A Encenação do Regime" (Lisbon: Colibri, 2011) and "Portuguese Cinema 1930-1960: The Staging of the New State Regime" (New York: Bloomsbury Press, 2013, forthcoming).

She has co-edited with Michael Marder "Existential Utopia: New Perspectives on Utopian Thought" (London and New York: Continuum, 2011), as well as a special issue of the "Journal of Contemporary Thought" titled "Utopias Today!", and has edited an issue of "CLCweb: Comparative Literature and Culture" titled "Politics and Identity in Lusophone Literature and Culture".

Some of her recent publications include articles on Portuguese film, postcolonial studies in Portugal and in Lusophone Africa, Brazilian poetry, Portuguese feminist writing and Portuguese national identity. She is currently working on a book project on utopian writing in the Portuguese-speaking world.
