Bio

Lucile L. Adams-Campbell, PhD, is an epidemiologist who specializes in community health research, interventions, and outreach. With a focus on prevention, she studies issues that affect populations at the greatest risk for developing cancer. Dr. Adams-Campbell has participated and led several large cohort studies of African-American women and played a leading role in bringing the Boston University Black Women’s Health Study – the largest study of African-American women – to the District of Columbia. Lombardi will soon join the 12-year national study under Dr. Adams-Campbell’s leadership.

Much of Dr. Adams-Campbell’s research focuses on energy balance – diet and exercise. The District of Columbia has high rates of obesity, diabetes, cancer, cancer death, and heart disease, all of which may be affected by diet and exercise. Through community-based interventions, she hopes to decrease obesity and mortality from these related diseases.

As director of the Howard University Cancer Center for 13 years prior to joining Lombardi in 2008, Dr. Adams-Campbell has played a leading role in the DC cancer and public health community, she was born in the District, and has lived here for most of her life.

Dr. Adams-Campbell currently serves as a reviewer or on the editorial board for eight journals and has published over 150 peer-reviewed research papers. She was recently inducted into the Institute of Medicine, and has received the 2011 GUMC Leadership in Research Award and the 2010 Legacy Laureate Award from the University of Pittsburgh.
