He is also Executive Vice President, Senior Strategist at Baron Public Affairs, a Washington-based corporate public policy strategy firm.
Before joining Baron Public Affairs, Dr. Hull served as Senior Vice President and Campaign Manager, U.S. Public Affairs, at Hill & Knowlton, a global public relations firm, and has spent the last decade doing public affairs work. In addition, Dr. Hull has served as the Majority Staff Director of the Iowa Senate, a press secretary for a member of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, an Assistant to the Director of Communications at a national party committee, and a legislative aide in the U.S. Senate. Dr. Hull also helped edit and research What Comes Next: The End of Big Government and the New Paradigm to Come, a book by James P. Pinkerton. Dr. Hull graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1992 with a degree in Government. In 2005, he completed a doctoral program with distinction at Georgetown University’s Government Department. His dissertation, “How Presidential Candidates Win State Nomination Contests: Explaining and Predicting the Iowa Caucus”, was nominated for the E. E. Schattschneider Prize, the American Political Science Association’s award for best dissertation of the year in American politics. Dr. Hull’s research interests center on presidential nomination politics, campaign technology, and advertising strategy. He has presented more than 20 papers at academic conferences since 2004. His first book, Grassroots Rules: How the Iowa Caucus Helps Elect American Presidents, was published in November, 2007 by Stanford University Press. Hull bikes, swims, collects old books, and holds belts in three martial arts. He is married to the lovely Valerija K.
