Bio

Tim Beach holds the Cinco Hermanos Chair in Environment and International Affairs and is Professor of Geography and Geoscience. He is a past Director of the Program in Science, Technology, & International Affairs (STIA) and was the Director of Georgetown University's Center for the Environment from 1999 until 2007. He has conducted field research in the US Corn Belt, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Syria, Turkey, and Germany funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Geographic Society, USAID, USIA, and Georgetown University. Based on these field studies, he has published many articles and chapters and has made numerous scientific presentations around the world. His research focuses on soil and agricultural systems, environmental change, and geoarchaeology. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and awarded Guggenheim and Dumbarton Oaks Fellowships, the G.K. Gilbert Award in Geomorphology in 2010 (along with his co-author), and Georgetown University’s only Distinguished Research Award in 2010. He also teaches courses in environmental science and physical geography (climatology, hydrology, geomorphology, and environmental management) and how these relate to international management and policy in the STIA and environmental studies programs.
