Research Building

My research focuses on 1) developing, evaluating, and optimizing technology-based smoking cessation interventions that have broad reach to smokers who might not otherwise access treatment, and 2) addressing the unique measurement and methodological challenges in conducting technology-based dissemination and implementation research. I have led and collaborated on a range of smoking cessation trials, with a primary focus on web-, telephone, SMS, and online social network interventions. I have extensive experience in the management and oversight of web-based randomized trials, including issues unique to the conduct of Internet- and social network based studies such as recruitment and retention, measurement issues in online social networks, data safety and monitoring, and human subjects protections. I lead the Truth Initiative Innovations group, a software development team that has developed and deployed a range of technology-based applications for cessation. Central to these applications is, a web- and SMS-based application for smoking cessation that has accrued over 800,000 users since its inception in 2008. I lead the management of BecomeAnEX and currently have 3 active R01 projects and several other extramural awards/contracts that involve the website and its integrated SMS application. Our team has also developed a social media mobile application for young adult smokers (ThisIsQuitting); a web-based clinical trials management system; a Facebook smoking cessation app; and a dynamic text messaging intervention that operates both as a standalone and adjunct intervention to other treatment modalities.
