2002-2006

In 2002, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) engaged CARA, the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University, to study the attitudes of Catholics regarding international relief and development and global social justice. One of the central aims of the research was to identify groups of Catholics who share goals with CRS and may be potentially receptive to becoming involved with CRS. CARA conducted a survey of nearly 1,500 self-identified adult Catholics using the Internet panel of the Knowledge Networks polling organization. Using segmentation analysis to examine the results, CARA identified distinct groups (or “segments”) of Catholics with regard to attitudes on international and related issues. In 2006, CRS engaged CARA to conduct a replication of the segmentation study. In September 2006, CARA surveyed 1,892 self-identified Catholics, again drawing on the Knowledge Networks panel. With the exception of a few minor changes, the survey used questions identical to those used in 2002.
