The International Politics of Data Privacy
2002- Over the last decade, more than 30 nations have adopted strict data privacy laws that leave the power to determine the transmission of personal information largely in the hands of consumers. Remarkably, Europe – and not the US – has led this effort, setting privacy rules worldwide and challenging US dominance in international market regulation. The project examines the origins and surprising diffusion of European privacy rules. Arguing that internal reforms within Europe have increased the region’s regulatory capacity to assert itself internationally, the work challenges the perception that Europe will continue to play second fiddle to the US in international regulatory affairs. |
