Studi Rinascimentali Renaissance Studies (2011): 141-160. The article examines two mid-sixteenth-century theatrical works by Beltramo Poggi. La Cangenia, a tragicomedy published in 1561 (from an earlier manuscript version of 1555) and dedicated to Francesco de' Medici, contains a complex web of political references alluding to the war with Siena, while L'Inventione della Croce, a spiritual comedy also published in 1561 (also extant in an earlier manuscript) and dedicated to Isabella de' Medici, can be seen to be part of the Medici family's own cult of the Cross. When we compare the two published versions with their respective manuscripts, we discover that Poggi, an author that has been largely ignored by scholars, is in fact quite a capable dramatist aware of the political and religious needs of the Medici court. |
