Was Teresa of Avila a Feminist

Mujica, Barbara. "Was Teresa of Avila a Feminist." Approaches to Teaching Teresa of Avila and the Spanish Mystics. Ed. Alison Weber. New York: Modern Language Association, 2009: 74-82

Although Teresa de Avila often denigrated women, her apparent misogyny is more a reflection of her times than an ideology. Teresa did much to benefit women. She apprecfiated women's spirituality and provided women with a place where they could devote themselves to God. She offered them important positions as prioresses and gave them power over the administration of their convents. She championed women's literacy and gave women the opportunity to work as chroniclers, nurses, accountants, and teachers.
