This article provides a descriptive and analytical account of the evolutionary development of Islam as a factor of political legitimacy in post-independence Malaysia. Although Islam intertwined with Malay ethnicity has always been the single most important factor in Malaysian politics since independence, political Islam has evolved over the decades in both rhetoric and substance in line with political, religious, economic, and socio-cultural changes taking place both within and outside Malaysia.
