International Dramaturgy: Translations & Transformations in the Theatre of Timberlake WertenbakerMaya E. Roth and Sara Freeman, ed. International Dramaturgy: Translations & Transformations in the Theatre of Timberlake Wertenbaker. Brussels: PIE-Peter Lang Press, 2008. The central argument of this significant collection of interdisciplinary critical essays and artist contributions is that all of Wertenbaker's playwriting—formal translations from ancient Greek, French, and Italian to English, adaptations of classics, non-fiction, and literature to the stage, and original works-- can be understood in relation to translation issues. As a consequence, this international anthology serves as a case study of translation theory, ethics, and practices in specific relation to theater, more broadly, just as the field begins a translational turn. In addition to conceiving the volume's framework, I provide the Introductory Chapter (on Translation in Theater and Wertenbaker), a central chapter on Wertenbaker's history plays ("Cultural Translations from 'New Anatomies' to 'After Darwin') and an interview with Carey Perloff. |
