Let the Ashes Speak to Our Hearts

Stephen M Fields SJ. "Let the Ashes Speak to Our Hearts." Ignatian Imprints 15 Feb. 2007: .

A spiritual reflection, this article invites us to put the Ash Wednesday ritual into concrete action throughout Lent. It suggests ways to examine our consciences by appealing to St Augustine's Confesssions. In addition, using a story by Andre Dubus, it encourages developing a penitential spirit by considering sin's effects on ourselves and others. It also proposes that we spend time assessing how we can grow in the virtues, especially temperance and fortitude. In closing, it reminds us that if during Lent we climb hard with Mary and John up to Calvary's bleak afternoon, then with Thomas on Easter we will be able to finger with delight the warmth of Christ's risen wounds.
