John Paul II and the Eucharist: Sacrifice and Sacrament of FreedomStephen M Fields SJ. "John Paul II and the Eucharist: Sacrifice and Sacrament of Freedom." John Paul II on the Body: Human-Eucharistic-Ecclesial. Ed. John M McDermott and John Gavin. Philadelphia: St Joseph’s University Press, 2007: 203-16 John Paul's eucharistic theology integrates into an original synthesis the twin aspects of the sacrament -- consecrated act and sacred meal. God's freedom as self-sacrificing love lies at the core of this synthesis. Participation in the eucharist perfects human feeedom by drawing us intimately into God's own freedom. The Pope uses his own personalist metaphysics to explain this dynamism. In so doing, he boldly enriches Aquinas's understanding of sacramental efficacy, even as he lodges the eucharist in the heart of the Church. A revived notion of the Mass as sacrifice emerges. |
