Sister Teresa

Mujica, Barbara. Sister Teresa. New York: Overlook Press, 2007.

A novel based on the life of St. Teresa of Avila. The book explores what it meant to be a converso during the madness of the Inquisition, attitudes towards visionaries and ecstatics, daily life in a 16th-century Spanish convent, Teresa's rebellion against the staid religious conventions of her day, the wars in the Low Countries and the New World and how they effected everyday Spaniards, and Teresa's strategies for promoting the reform in a patriarchal Church.
