Department of History

Richard Kuisel teaches at the BMW Center for German and European Studies and in the History Department. Prior to Georgetown he held professorial appointments at the SUNY Stony Brook, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Illinois. He has also taught at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris, New York University, and Stanford University. His PhD (1963) is from the University of California at Berkeley. Currently he also lectures at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute.
His major area of expertise esearch is 20th century French history with an emphasis on Franco-American relations. He has also published on topics like: modernization and national identity, economic policy, the French cinema, and the Marshall Plan.
His awards and honors include several book prizes as well as fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
