Dr. Peter G. Shields is currently a tenured professor in the Departments of Oncology and Medicine and Deputy Director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University. He was the past Interim-Chair of the Department of Medicine, Vice-Chair of the Department of Oncology, Associate Director for Cancer Control and Population Sciences, and Program Leader for Cancer Genetics and Epidemiology in the Cancer Center. Dr. Shields' focus of research is on gene-environment interactions for cancer risk. The laboratory component of his research develops new biomarkers of cancer risk related to diet and lifestyle, while his epidemiological component accrues special populations. A significant component of his research focuses on the genetics of tobacco carcinogenesis, harm and addiction, which is funded by a multi-institution contract from the National Cancer Institute (Shields: PI). Another major initiative that is led by Dr. Shields is a Breast Cancer Center of Excellence funded by the Department of Defense (funding expires 2009). This program is a multi-investigator and multidisciplinary approach to understand why alcohol drinking causes breast cancer. Among the other projects he directs is a NCI-funded joint partnership for cancer prevention and control for health disparities with the University of District of Columbia.

Dr. Shields has over 150 peer-reviewed publications, including in high profile journals. He serves, or has served, on editorial boards of major journals such as Carcinogenesis; Molecular Carcinogenesis; Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, and; Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. Dr. Shields has been recently elected as President-Elect of the American Society of Preventive Oncology. He was the first elected chair to lead the 420 member Molecular Epidemiology Group of the American Association of Cancer Research, and has been the Program Chair or member of numerous program committees. Dr. Shields served on the NIH Study Section that reviews Comprehensive Centers (Subcommittee B) and was a standing member of the Epidemiology and Disease Control 2 NIH study section. In the past, he has served on the NCI Tobacco Research Implementation Group, NCI Lung Cancer Progress Review Group, and also on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Tobacco Harm Reduction. At Georgetown University, he is a member of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Senior Operational Leadership Team and the oversight committee for the Ph.D. Tumor Biology Program.

Dr. Shields practices hematology at Georgetown University. He has a long history of working in the DC community, for example, serving as the past President of the Board of Directors for a free medical clinic here in D.C. (La Clinica del Pueblo). He finished an 8 year term as a member of the D.C. Board of Medicine. Dr. Shields also is active in tobacco control and other legislative efforts, such as working to pass smoke-free legislation and requiring insurance companies to provide coverage for costs related to clinical trials, and serving as an expert witness in litigation against tobacco companies. Dr. Shields also directs Lombardi’s Capital Breast Care Center, which is a breast cancer screening clinic for underserved women. In 2007, this Center received the Avon Foundation’s Medical Service Achievement Award, their highest honor. Dr. Shields also received the Pro Bono Health Care Award from The John Carroll Society in 2008.
