My research is in the area of environmental history. My latest book, written together with my former student Peter Engelke, is The Great Acceleration (2016), a study of global environmental change since 1945. The previous one, Mosquito Empires (2010) concerns ecology and warfare in the Greater Caribbean in the 17th-20th centuries. It won the Beveridge Prize of the American Historical Association for the best book on the history of the western hemisphere.

In the years to come I hope to write a global environmental history of the Industrial Revolution and a study of the geopolitical history of fossil fuels.
