Bio

Lonnie Henley is a member of the Defense Intelligence Senior Level executive service at Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), where he serves as the Agency's senior analyst for China. Mr. Henley has been a China specialist for over 30 years, beginning with 22 years in the US Army as a China foreign area officer and military intelligence officer. His Army career included multiple assignments in Korea, at DIA, on Army Staff, and in the History Department at
West Point. After retiring from the Army he joined the senior civil service as Defense
Intelligence Officer for East Asia and then Senior Intelligence Expert for Strategic
Warning at DIA. Leaving DIA in 2004, he worked two years as a senior analyst with
CENTRA Technology, Inc., before returning to government service in 2006. From then until fall 2008 he was a member of the Senior National Intelligence Service as Deputy National Intelligence Officer for East Asia in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. In addition to his government position, Mr. Henley is an adjunct professor in the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering and Chinese from the US Military Academy at West Point, and master's degrees in Chinese language from Oxford University, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar; in Chinese history from Columbia University; and in strategic intelligence from the National Defense Intelligence College. He speaks and reads Mandarin Chinese and French. His wife Sara Hanks is chief financial counsel to the US Congressional Oversight Panel addressing the economic crisis. Mr. Henley and Ms. Hanks live in Alexandria, Virginia.
