Bio
Dr. Schiwietz is the curricular Dean for the major in International Economics and the certificate in American Studies at the School of Foreign Service in Qatar. Her research interests include New Technologies & Society, Gender Roles, Peace, Security and International Development.
In 2010, Prof. Schiwietz received the Main Campus Departmental Nomination for the distinguished Deans Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Schiwietz is the Past-President of The District of Columbia Sociological Society, one of the oldest regional sociological associations in the United States.
Professor Schiwietz designed three innovative course offerings for the main campus sociology curriculum: Women and International Development; Visual Sociology and Consumer Technology; Food, Politics and Culture. In addition, she has also taught courses on: Views from the Third World, Gender Roles, Race and Ethnic Relations, American Society, Social Problems, Social Deviance and Theater as Social Change.
Dr. Schiwietz is also co-founder of International Reputation Management, a digital marketing and public relations firm established at the vanguard of social digital innovation "Calling in Pros to Refine Your Google Image."
A visionary and pragmatic scholar at the forefront of the technology revolution she has widely addressed the impact of emerging technologies on society, privacy, government regulations, social change, and reputations.
Prof. Schiwietz recently spoke on a panel the Federal Trade Commission on "Using Social Media for Debt Collection: Consumer Information, Collector Communications, and Privacy Issues in light of how consumers understand and use social media and their expectations regarding privacy."
She has been quoted in a variety of national and international publications, including: The New York Times, NPR, Le Monde, and Die Welt.
Dr. Schiwietz spoke at the National Press Club, Washington DC about a book she co-authored "PUBLIC: The Race to Establish Your Identity Online." She also helped to develop personal privacy software called PrivateAgain, which works with Internet browsers to erase cookies.
Dr. Schiwietz has written and directed several acclaimed documentaries. Her film, Sacred Mount Athos - Treasures from the Byzantine Millennium received the prestigious Telly Award.
Professor Schiwietz is a strong proponent of integrating community-based learning and research as a means for students to enhance their academic learning beyond the campus and is involved with the Community Research and Learning (CoRAL) Network. She encourages intellectual engagement through community service to better understand key concepts in her courses.
She was invited to address the United Nations Women’s Guild on the topic of the European Union’s Gender Equality Initiative. In 2009, Dr. Schiwietz spoke at the 53rd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women on "The Role of the Family in Building Social and Economic Security for Humanity."
She possesses fluency in five languages: German, French, Greek, Italian, and English.
Dr. Schiwietz is a graduate of George Washington and American University.
