Bio

Dr. Schiwietz research interests include Women and International Development, Social Justice, Technology, Social Media and Visual Sociology.

Professor Schiwietz designed two new course offerings beginning Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 – Women and Development, Visual Sociology and Consumer Technology. In addition, she has also taught courses on: Women in the Third World, Views from the Third World, Gender Roles, Introduction to Sociology, Race and Ethnic Relations, American Society, and Social Deviance.

A documentary film producer, Dr. Schiwietz has written and directed several acclaimed documentaries. Her film, The Sacred Mount Athos-Treasures from the Byzantine Millennium received the prestigious Telly Award. Her use of media as social and cultural documents highlight the representation of our world through visual discourse, literacy and theoretical visual and analytical methods of media. She is also the co-founder of International Reputation Management, a digital public relations firm specializing in image management and Googleability.

Professor Schiwietz is a strong proponent of integrating community-based learning as a means for students to enhance their academic learning beyond the campus and is very involved with the Community Research and Learning (CoRAL) Network. She encourages intellectual engagement through community service to better understand key concepts in her courses.

She was invited in 2005, to address the United Nations Women’s Guild on the topic of the European Union’s Gender Equality Initiative.

In 2009, Dr. Schiwietz was asked to speak at the 53rd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women on "The Role of the Family in Building Social and Economic Security for Humanity."

Dr. Schiwietz possesses fluency in five languages: German, French, Greek, Italian, and English. Her travels have brought her to: Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa, México, Guatemala, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Tibet, Russia as well as most of Western Europe.

She is a graduate of both George Washington and American University and is a member of the American Sociological Society.
