ResearchI am currently collecting late imperial first-person accounts of dreams in order to explore how the personal experience of dream intersected with the prevailing notions of dream interpretation, of dream as path to parallel realms of existence, and with the late-imperial obsession with dream as structuring literary device.
I also have back-burner projects on the language in which musical performance was discussed in late-imperial China, and on the depictions of foreignness in the sixteenth century novel Sanbao taijian xiyangji (The Journeys of the Eunuch Sanbao [Zheng He] to the Western Seas). |
