Bio
Dr. Shaw received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky. His research interests are optical communications, inverse scattering theory and applied mathematics. He has authored numerous papers in these fields and a research monograph on optical solitons.
He joined the faculty at Georgetown in August, 2005, following a three-year term as a program officer in applied mathematics at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Shaw’s primary responsibility at Georgetown is to help coordinate the Masters Degree Program in Mathematics and Statistics.
Previous to the NSF position Dr. Shaw was for many years a Professor of Mathematics at Virginia Tech, where he also held a courtesy appointment in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has served as a consultant for the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington DC, and the Naval Surface Weapons Center, Dahlgren VA. His research has been supported by grants or contracts from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Navy and U. S. Air Force. He has worked in areas including optical communications, nonlinear optics and artificial neural networks.
In March, 2007, Dr. Shaw took a position as a rotator program officer with the Office of Naval Research, where he supervised research funding in image analysis. He returned to Georgetown in July, 2008.
