Prior positions include curator of rare books in The Johns Hopkins University’s Sheridan Libraries and curator of collections at Rare Book School, an independent institute for the history of books and printing based at the University of Virginia, where he continues annually to co-teach the introductory survey course, "The History of the Book, 200-2000." His graduate study concentrated on early modern English literature. His primary field of research is on early modern literary patronage and book dedications, with a particular focus on the patronage of Henry, Prince of Wales (1594-1612). Buchtel has published, lectured, taught, and curated exhibitions on early modern literary patronage, the history of the book, book collecting, the history of the Georgetown University Library, the B&O Employes' [sic] Free Circulating Library, and the popular reception of Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre. Buchtel is active in the Bibliographical Society of America (BSA), the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing (SHARP), and the Grolier Club. Education
