Bio

Gary Filerman is a professor and chair of the Department of Health Systems Administration at Georgetown University, which includes the graduate and undergraduate programs as well as a number of research and service activities. He is recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on the development of management for health services and has a variety other interests. His teaching focuses on the challenge of improving the quality of health services and on managerial aspects of health services in developing countries.

Dr. Filerman brings a distinguished career to teaching at Georgetown. As president of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) for 26 years he provided leadership for the development of education for the field in the United States and over thirty other countries. He also headed the accrediting commission for graduate programs for sixteen years and served as founding editor of The Journal of Health Administration Education. This work is recognized by The Filerman Prize for Innovation in Education, the highest award in the field.

Dr. Filerman served as associate director of The Pew Commission on Education for the Health Professions, an effort to bring professional education into sinc with the needs of the emerging health system. He was a founding board member and president of the David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship and senior scientist at the Center for Health Services Research of the Medical Group Management Association. He developed a model of foundation collaboration for the American Legacy Foundation.

His international activities have included consultantships to foundations, international agencies and governments, including the W.K.Kellogg Foundation, The World Bank, Pan American Health Organization and the International Finance Corporation. The focus of the work was improving management capacity and competency. He was a member of the team that developed the reorganization plan for the health system of Romania.

Dr. Filerman is currently working on management development for health care in correctional institutions, the role of unionization in hospitals and the role of international quality standards for hospitals. He recently completed the planning for a national center for hospital and health system pharmacy leadership that has been implemented by the Foundation of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He is a consultant to Joint Commission International and several health service delivery organizations. He serves on the editorial boards of several journals and is the author of over sixty articles, chapters, monographs and books.

Dr. Filerman earned a B.A., MHA, MA and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, which recognized him with the Regent’s Distinguished Contribution award. He is an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa, an honorary alumnus of the University of Chicago and a recipient of the silver medal of Luven University.
