She grew up in northwest Indiana and received both her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She earned her PhD in English from the University of Washington. She joined the Georgetown University faculty in 1990, teaching courses such as Class Fictions in Contemporary America, Feminist Cultural Theory, Intro. To Cultural Studies, Cultural Constructions of Motherhood, the Victorian Social Novel, Cultural Representations of Women, and the Women’s Studies Capstone Seminar. Research specialties include working-class literature and culture, American popular culture, feminist materialist theory, literature by women (both British and American), country music.
