B I O G R A P H Y 2014
P e t e r C h a r l e s was born in Washington, D.C., grew up and lived in the metropolitan area until he graduated from the U.S. Capitol Page School. He earned degrees at the Rhode Island School of Design where he entered the painting program, took up sculpture, and ultimately received a, BFA, Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture. He attended the Yale University School of Art and Architecture while Jack Tworkov and James Rosati headed the painting and sculpture programs. He received a, MFA, Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture at Yale. Charles now teaches sculpture and design at Georgetown University where he is a tenured professor of art.
While still a student, he had his first show at the Agra Gallery in Washington, DC. Since then Peter has exhibited his sculpture, drawings and mixed media works at numerous public venues and private galleries. He has presented solo exhibitions of his work in galleries and museums throughout the United States: at The Phillips Collection, Henri Gallery, Baumgartner Gallery, David Adamson Gallery, Anton Gallery, Irvine Contemporary Art and the Cross-Mackenzie Gallery in Washington, D.C.; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), Winston-Salem, NC; the Huntington Museum, Huntington, WV; Zolla-Lieberman Gallery, Chicago, Il; the Touchstone Gallery, the Ruth Siegel Gallery, Kim Foster Gallery, the David Findlay Galleries, the Walter Wickiser Gallery in New York, NY and the Koplin Gallery, Los Angeles and Santa Monica, CA. In addition, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions at, among others; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; The Institute of Contemporary Arts, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY. His work is represented in public, corporate and private collections.
Mr. Charles is a recipient of a SECCA Awards in the Visual Arts; Individual Artist’s Grant, and a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Visual Arts Fellowship Grant.
