Bio

A Visiting Assistant Professor in the Italian Department since 1984, Professor Chambers has been teaching Intensive Basic and Intensive Advanced Italian since 1977, and in 1994 also taught Italian at Georgetown University's summer program at Villa Le Balze in Fiesole, Italy.

Professor Chambers developed "Italian through Opera," an innovative first-year Italian course that teaches vocabulary and grammar through part readings of opera libretti and playbacks of taped performance excerpts, and has also written manuals for English speakers to accompany various Italian textbooks (Uno, Due, Linea diretta).

She is the author of Bibliography of French Bibles, a monumental two-volume classification of fifteenth-, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century editions of French translations of the Scriptures, published by Droz in Geneva (1983, 1994). She has also written on French and Italian editions of the Bible and has presented conference papers on this subject. Professor Chambers was awarded two grants by the National Endowment for the Humanities to underwrite her research for the major two-volume Bibliography of French Bibles. She was also awarded a Georgetown University Summer Academic Research Grant to develop the "Italian through Opera" course.

In collaboration with several European colleagues, Professor Chambers is completing preparation of a bibliography of the Psalms in French verse, 1500-1900, for which she also received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
