Large Union President Joins Policy Institute

Washington, D.C. – The past president of one of the largest unions in North America will join the Georgetown Public Policy Institute (GPPI) as a senior research fellow beginning Aug. 1.

GPPI announced the appointment of former Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President Andy Stern to the position, for which he will conduct and coordinate research efforts on a number of social policy issues, including wage reform, labor policy, and retirement security.

He also will engage with the Georgetown community of students, faculty and alumni in a variety of ways, through guest lectures, workshops, and public events.

Stern who has served as SEIU president since 1996, is the author of A Country That Works: Getting America Back on Track, published by the Free Press in 2006.

“We are pleased to welcome Andy Stern to our public policy community,” said William Gormley, GPPI interim dean. “As head of the SEIU, Andy Stern has fought hard for comprehensive health reform and comprehensive immigration reform. His efforts to achieve economic opportunity and justice for all workers have had a profound effect on America’s workforce and the labor movement. His intellectual energy and reformist spirit will enrich and inform ongoing public policy debates, at Georgetown and beyond.”

Stern began working as a Pennsylvania social service worker and member of SEIU Local 668 in 1973 and later served as SEIU’s national organizing director before his election as president in 1996. During his presidency, SEIU grew by 1.2 million members, built alliances with business and advocacy organizations and challenged the American labor movement to focus more on organizing new workers. Stern led the move in 2005 to disaffiliate SEIU with AFL-CIO. He also transformed the national labor landscape by founding the Change to Win labor federation with six other major unions.

Stern is a Presidential Appointee to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. He currently is a lifetime Trustee of the Aspen Institute and he serves on the boards of directors of the Broad Foundation, Open Society Institute, and the Clean Economy Center.
