Media Advisory: AVON Continues Support of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC)

Three Grants Totaling $950,000 Will Help Continue the Fight Against Breast Cancer In DC

What: On May 1st and 2nd, the Lombardi/CBCC team consisting of 35 men and women from the Metro-area (including Lombardi’s Director, Louis M. Weiner) will walk 39 miles in the AVON Walk for Breast Cancer. The team, which has raised over $35,000 on behalf of the AVON Foundation, is considered one of the top-ten AVON fundraising teams.

Following the walk, the AVON Foundation will present a check for $950,000 to Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only NCI–designated comprehensive cancer center in the nation’s capitol, and to the Capital Breast Care Center, a community program of Lombardi. The grants will support two areas: cutting-edge breast cancer research at Lombardi and free breast cancer screenings to women from the District at the CBCC, regardless of their ability to pay.

The AVON Foundation has awarded nearly $3.1 million to Lombardi since 2001 in the fight against cancer. The Foundation has also provided funding for the CBCC since its inception in 2004. Last year, the AVON Foundation awarded the CBCC $750,000 which provided 2,500 women in the District with a free mammogram, 14 of whom were diagnosed—and—treated for breast cancer.
