University Appoints New General Counsel
Georgetown officials have named Stephanie Tsacoumis as the university’s new vice president and general counsel, effective Nov. 2.
Tsacoumis, who also has served as an adjunct professor at the Law Center, will be responsible for providing advice and counsel on a broad spectrum of legal issues at the university. She also will oversee a team of legal professionals within the Office of University Counsel.
“I am pleased to welcome Stephanie to the Georgetown community as the next phase in her distinguished legal career,” said President John J. DeGioia. “She has represented a broad array of clients in the nonprofit and corporate sectors on regulatory and transactional matters and brings experience as a counselor to senior management and boards of directors on issues of strategy, governance and compliance.”
The newly named counsel comes to Georgetown after serving as a corporate partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where she recently completed a six-year term as co-partner-in-charge of the Washington office. Prior to that, Tsacoumis was a corporate partner in the Washington offices of Morrison & Foerster LLP and McKenna, Conner & Cuneo.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as general counsel to a world-class institution with such a critical mission,” Tsacoumis said. “During my legal career, I have been fortunate to work closely with remarkable clients; I look forward to working with and learning from Georgetown’s exceptional faculty, students and administrators.”
Tsacoumis’ focus on pro bono work and community service as well as her expertise in mergers and acquisitions has earned her a number of accolades throughout her career.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary, her law degree from the University of Virginia and is widely published in her field.
Tsacoumis replaces Jane Genster, who stepped down after nine years in the position. Genster will remain at the university in a new post, senior counselor to the president.
