Honorary Degree Ceremony
John J. Sweeney, President of the AFL-CIO

Georgetown University bestowed a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on John Sweeney, President of the AFL-CIO. Mr. Sweeney has dedicated his life to improving working conditions and fighting for basic human rights for workers. From his early work as a labor organizer to his time spent as President of the SEIU in the 1980s and 90s, he has made a profound impact on the lives of working men and women across the country.

Mr. Sweeney was presented with the honorary degree and reflected on his life's work and dedication to social justice, which are rooted in his Catholic education and beliefs.

The event occurred in Gaston Hall and was sponsored by the Office of the President.
