Media Advisory: Renowned Author Laurie Garrett and Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) to Address Graduates at GUMC Commencement Ceremonies


What: Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) today announced speakers for its commencement exercises for Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies and Georgetown University School of Medicine. Stephen Ray Mitchell, M.D., dean of Medical Education, will confer MDs on 190 students, and Bette Jacobs, Ph.D., RN, dean of the School of Nursing & Health Studies, will confer BS degrees upon
162 students.

When: Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 16, at 6 p.m.

Georgetown University School of Medicine Commencement will be held on Sunday, May 17, at 11:00 a.m.

Who: School of Nursing & Health Studies, Laurie Garrett:
As a medical and science writer for Newsday, Laurie Garrett became the only writer ever to have been awarded: The Peabody, The Polk (twice), and The Pulitzer. Laurie is also the best-selling author of The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance and Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health. In March 2004, Laurie became Senior Fellow for Global Health at the Council on Foreign Relations. She is an expert on global health with a particular focus on newly emerging and re-emerging diseases; and public health and their effects on foreign policy and national security. Garrett is a member of the National Association of Science Writers, and served as the organization's President during the mid-1990s.

Georgetown University School of Medicine, The Honorable John Barrasso, U.S. Senator:
Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), was elected to the United States Senate on November 4, 2008. Barrasso, known by many as Wyoming’s Doctor has had a long and recognized career in both medicine and public service. He represented the people of Natrona County in the Wyoming State Senate for five years before he was appointed to the u.S. Senate to succeed the late Craig L. Thomas in June, 2007. During 24 years as an orthopedic surgeon in Casper, Barrasso served as President of the Wyoming Medical Society and was named Wyoming Physician of the Year. He also served as medical director of the Wyoming Health Fairs, bringing low-cost health screening exams to people all around the Cowboy State. Senator Barrasso serves on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee, the Indian Affairs Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
