What: Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and Capital Breast Care Center to be awarded $750,000 for its mission of providing breast cancer screening to underserved women at the annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Washington, DC. This is the second year the AVON Foundation has recognized the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Capital Breast Care Center to their dedication to breast cancer prevention and research. These funds will go to continue free screenings for women in the Washington area as well as additional research.

Jeanne Mandelblatt, MD, MPH, is Associate Director for Population Sciences at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is an expert on age- and race/ethnicity-related disparities in cancer care and outcomes. Dr. Mandelblatt has conducted more than a decade of research on issues including access to screening and treatment for breast and cervical cancer among elderly black women, and her research has demonstrated that mammography continues to save lives for elderly women of all ages, even in the presence of co-existent medical conditions. In 2006, Dr. Mandelblatt served on the editorial committee of the 2005-2010 DC Cancer Control Plan. In addition, she was the primary force behind winning a $1 million gift from Avon to develop the Capital Breast Cancer Center, a comprehensive breast cancer screening clinic for low-income residents in Southeast Washington, DC.
Leena Hilakivi-Clarke, PhD, is Professor of Oncology at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research focuses on the molecular pathways mediating the effects dietary exposures on breast cancer risk. Dr. Hilakivi-Clarke is the principle investigator of a National Cancer Institute-funded Center on Diet and Breast Cancer Risk. Among other factors, her work examines the impact of phytoestrogens - such as those found in soy, dietary fat, and alcohol on breast cancer risk in women and early life exposure in infants.
Nancy Muzeck
Nancy Muzeck, MBA, is Director of the Patient Navigator Program at Lombardi's Ourisman Breast Health Center at Georgetown University Hospital. The program pairs women undergoing breast surgery with a volunteer patient navigator who provides assistance with filling out forms, accessing patient resources, and navigating the hospital from appointment to appointment during her visit.
