Washington, D.C. -- Georgetown University has selected author Nina Tannenwald to receive the seventh annual Lepgold Book Prize for her book, "The Nuclear Taboo: The United States and the Non-Use of Nuclear Weapons Since 1945" (Cambridge University Press, 2007).
Tannenwald will give a lecture discussing themes from her book and will be honored during a ceremony at 4 p.m. on April 16 at the Mortara Building, 3600 N Street N.W. in Washington.
The award, given in honor of the late Georgetown professor of government and foreign service Joseph S. Lepgold, recognizes exceptional contributions to the study of international relations. Lepgold died in a tragic hotel fire in Paris in December 2001.
Previous recipients of the prize include John Mearsheimer for “The Tragedy of Great Power Politics,” Samantha Power for “A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide,” Michael McFaul and James Goldgeier for “Power and Purpose: U.S. Policy Towards Russia After the Cold War,” Jack Snyder and Edward Mansfield for “Electing to Fight” and Robert Kagan for “Dangerous Nation.”
Tannenwald is an associate research professor at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University. From 2003 to 2006, she was director of Brown’s international relations program and has previously been a visiting professor at Stanford and Cornell universities. An expert on nuclear weapons issues, Tannenwald has also been a consultant to the United Nations Association. Her research focuses on the role of international institutions, norms and ideas in global security issues and efforts to control weapons of mass destruction. Tannenwald is currently working on a project assessing how the Geneva Conventions on humanitarian law influence the behavior of states.
