Washington, D.C. – For the third year in a row, Georgetown University was named to the annual President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. The Corporation for National and Community Service recognized Georgetown for the university’s leadership in helping to build a culture of service and civic engagement on campus and across the nation. The awards were announced on February 9th at the 91st Annual Meeting of the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C.
“This recognition highlights Georgetown’s commitment to citizenship and service,” said President John J. DeGioia. “Through the many community service initiatives sponsored by the university, our students, faculty and staff are involved in addressing some of the most pressing needs locally and around the world.”
The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll was launched in 2006 to recognize colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs.
“In this time of economic distress, we need volunteers more than ever. College students represent an enormous pool of idealism and energy to help tackle some of our toughest challenges,” said Stephen Goldsmith, vice chair of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “We salute Georgetown for making community service a campus priority, and thank the millions of college students who are helping to renew America through service to others.”
In all, 635 schools were listed on the Honor Roll for their community service activities during the 2007-2008 academic year. Georgetown was among 83 schools recognized as Honor Roll with Distinction members. A full list is available at www.nationalservice.gov/honorroll.
“It is an honor for Georgetown to again receive this recognition,” said Kathleen Maas Weigert, executive director of the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service. “We are deeply engaged in the community at many levels, and this honor recognizes that work. It is a tribute to our students, faculty and staff as well as to the partners we work with and the communities we serve.”
The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and is jointly sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.
