Former U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel Joins Georgetown Faculty

Washington, D.C. – Today, Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) announced that former U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska has joined the faculty as distinguished professor in the practice of national governance.

Hagel will teach undergraduate and graduate student courses in U.S. foreign policy. In addition to his teaching commitments, Hagel will also conduct seminars and other educational activities for students in the School of Foreign Service and the broader University community.

“Senator Hagel brings great expertise on important foreign and domestic issues facing our nation,” said Georgetown President John J. DeGioia. “He is a great addition to our community of distinguished scholars, and I look forward to his contributions to Georgetown.”

“I am honored to become part of this respected institution and look forward to contributing to the important efforts that Georgetown continues to make in educating our next generation of leaders,” said Senator Chuck Hagel.

First elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996, Hagel served two consecutive terms. He also served as chair of both the Senate Global Climate Change Observer Group and the Senate Oversight Task Force and co-chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. Hagel has been a member of four Senate committees – the Committee on Foreign Relations; the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; the Select Committee on Intelligence; and the Committee on Rules and Administration.

Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate, the former congressman worked in the private sector as the president of McCarthy & Co., an investment banking firm based in Omaha, Neb., and served as chairman of the board of American Information Systems. Before joining McCarthy & Co., Hagel sat as president and chief executive officer of the Private Sector Council in Washington, deputy director and chief operating officer of the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations (G-7 Summit) and president and CEO of the World United Service Organizations.

“I am pleased to welcome Senator Hagel to the School of Foreign Service and know he will offer valuable insight and understanding on critical issues in foreign policy and on the policy making process,” said SFS Dean Robert L. Gallucci.

Hagel continues to be an active public servant through his participation in a range of civic, educational, and charitable organizations such as the Institute of Politics at Harvard University, the International Republican Institute, the German Marshall Fund’s Trade and Poverty Forum, the Eisenhower World Affairs Institute and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a trustee at Bellevue University and Hastings College, both of Nebraska, and co-chair of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Corporate Council.

Hagel has authored “America: Our Next Chapter: Tough Questions, Straight Answers” (Ecco 2008), in which he discusses domestic issues – including the health care crisis, immigration and Social Security and Medicare reform. He also examines foreign policy problems, including China’s growing economy, India and Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities, and Iran’s aggressive political, ideological and nuclear stances.

A fourth generation Nebraskan, Hagel was born Oct. 4, 1946 in North Platte, Neb. He graduated from the Brown Institute for Radio and Television in 1966 and from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1971. The decorated Vietnam War veteran served in the U.S. Army infantry from 1967 to 1968. He has earned the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, two Purple Hearts, the Army Commendation Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Hagel and his wife, Lilibet, have two children, daughter Allyn and son Ziller.
