2010 McDonough School of Business Commencement
Commencement Address by BET Network Co-Founder Sheila Johnson
May 22, 2010

On May 22, undergraduates from the McDonough School of Business’ Class of 2010 received a charge from BET network co-founder Sheila Johnson to bring a global perspective with them as they begin their careers. Johnson, also CEO of Salamander Hospitality, said that of the 75 wealthiest people to ever live, a disproportionate number were Americans from two eras in history, either having been born between 1821 and 1840 or 1953 and 1956. “These individuals came of age at exactly the moment that old assumptions about the economy failed and new ones, by force, were being born,” she said. “In each case, the most successful took advantage of opportunities that had never existed before.
